Marcus Rashford reveals the reason he was dropped for Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Wolves in Premier League

Marcus Rashford has revealed the reason he was dropped by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag for the match against Wolves – because he was late for a team meeting having overslept.

It was a big surprise to not see Rashford in the starting line-up with Erik ten Hag revealing the England international was left out for an “internal disciplinary” issue.

“It’s a mistake that can happen,” Rashford said in his post-match interview with BT Sport after he struck the winning goal in the 76th-minute as Man Utd climbed to fourth in the Premier League table following the 1-0 win.

“I’m obviously disappointed not to play, but I understand the decision, and I’m happy that we managed to win the game anyway.

“I think we can draw a line under it and move on.”

Rashford has already scored 11 goals this season, more than double his tally of last term and the England international is pleased with his current form.

“Yeah, I think I’m in a good place,” he said. “I’m just pleased with the way we’re progressing. I think in the past we can lose that game or definitely draw it.”

Ten Hag admitted that he was delighted with Rashford’s reaction to being dropped.

“It’s good after the decision, Rashford came in,” Ten Hag told BT Sport.

“He was bright, he was lively, and he scored a goal to give a good reaction. Everyone has to adhere to the rules and if you react like this, it is the right answer.”

Luke Shaw, who played the game as a makeshift centre-half, was also full of praise for his team-mate.

“He is in a really good way at the moment,” he said.

“Extremely confident, very positive. He is world class, and he can be one of the best players in the world if he keeps going.”

On the discipline Ten Hag is showing in the changing room, Shaw added: “At a top club like this it has to be like that. There has to be discipline. The manager takes all of that into consideration.

“People have got away with silly things before. Like you’ve seen today, if you don’t do the little things right then you won’t play.”

In the BT Sport studio, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand piled the praise on Rashford.

“He came on and changed the game for United, he was a real threat,” said Scholes.

On his goal, Scholes added: “The pace and quality and finish at the end of it is something we all admire.

“He’s a match winner at the minute and it’s fitting that a number 10 scored the winning goal as well.

“It’s the confidence. When you’re playing well and scoring goals, you have the feelings before you go out on the football pitch. You think: ‘I’m going to score today’ and it doesn’t come around in your career that often, so while he’s doing this, he has to enjoy it and embrace it.

“He is flying, he’s very hard to handle. And you see the power, we see the strength and he’s bullied two big Wolves defenders, he just knocked them off the ball and smashed it in the net.”

Ferdinand said is in his current form, Rashford is unplayable.

“I just think there’s an aura about him at the moment that we’ve not seen from him for a while, he’s playing with a bit of a strut now,” Ferdinand added.

“I think all things are kind of fitting into place now. You can see now he’s getting opportunities, he’s scoring, he’s playing through the middle a lot more as well, which he likes, and the goals are coming.

“This is most fruitful season to date and he’s producing in terms of goals but assists as well.”
