Mark Davis stuns Luca Brecel at International Championship, Mark Selby eases past Stuart Carrington into third round

Mark Davis stunned reigning world champion Luca Brecel 6-3 to march into the third round of the International Championship.

World No. 64 Davis motored into a 4-0 lead to get off to a perfect start in Tianjin, and despite Brecel managing to bring the score back to 4-3, Davis won the next two frames to seal an impressive win.

Davis drew first blood in the contest with a break of 51 and doubled his advantage thanks to a fine 76 clearance.

After coming out on top again in a third-frame safety battle, Davis raced into a 4-0 lead with a break of 64.

Any hopes of a whitewash were extinguished when Brecel got on the board at 4-1 and he reduced the deficit further with a fine clearance of 87.

The Belgian was on roll and a break of 94 saw him move one away from levelling the scores.

A safety battle ensued in frame eight with a tightly-packed group of reds still on the table, but it was Davis that came out on top to re-establish his lead.

He managed the table masterfully and wrapped up the frame with one left on the table in a break of 59.

The 51-year-old finished off the match in style after the table opened up nicely, leaving the best until last with a century break of 107 to seal a place in round three.

Either Pang Junxu or Fan Zhengyi lie in wait in the next round.

Meanwhile, Mark Selby eased past Stuart Carrington 6-2.

Selby raced into a 4-0 lead with breaks of 66 and 88 in the first and fourth frames respectively.

Carrington hit back in the fifth frame after an impressive clearance of 70, but normal service resumed when the world No. 5 added a break of 110 to move 5-1 ahead.

The world No. 103 was hanging on in the contest to reduce the arrears again with a break of 82, but this only prolonged the inevitable.

Selby won the eighth frame with relative ease and set up a third-round clash with Xiao Guodong.

Zhang Anda won four frames in a row as he beat Mark Williams 6-3.

Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan play later on Monday.
