Martin Short, Meryl Streep dating rumors causes fan frenzy: ‘I am not prepared’
Don’t start trying to figure out their combined couple name — Shreep? Strort? — just yet.
Martin Short, 73, has shot down the rumors that he’s dating Meryl Streep, 74.
A rep for the “Father of the Bride” actor told TMZ that he and “The Devil Wears Prada” actress are “just friends.”
The two sparked dating rumors after they looked extra cozy at the 2024 Golden Globes.
Fans took to X to post enthusiastically about this possible Hollywood romance.
“My first tweet of the year is dedicated to the rumor that Meryl Streep and Martin Short may be an item. If the rumor is true, I am not prepared for it. It’s as if the comedy and drama masks themselves were merging. I adore them both and wish them well in any predicament,” one fan wrote.
“Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if that’s true… that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft…” another fan posted.
Another Golden Globes viewer commented that they were much more interested in this potential duo than they were in Timothee Chalamet attending the event with his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner.
“timothee and kylie this timothee and kylie that talk to me about martin short and meryl streep.”
“i need someone to talk to about these meryl streep/martin short dating rumors, this is truly my roman empire i swear” another fan said.
Streep recently co-starred in Season 3 of Short’s hit show “Only Murders in the Building,” which co-stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. The two are romantically entangled in the Hulu series.
Similar to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, Streep also confirmed her split from husband Don Gummer long after the fact.
Sources told Page Six in October that Streep – who married Gummer in 1978 and had four children with him, singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe, 44, actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 32 – have been quietly “separated for more than six years.”
Short was married to Canadian actress Nancy Dolman – with whom he had three kids, Katherine, 40, Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34 – from 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010.
“Our marriage was a triumph,” he told AARP magazine in 2019. “So it’s tough. She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time. It’s ‘Hey Nan,’ you know? How would she react to this decision or that, especially regarding our three kids.”
