Masters 2024: Kyren Wilson ‘absolutely sick’ after battling defeat to Judd Trump in first round of tournament

‘The Warrior’ took a surprise 3-0 lead in a scrappy affair at Alexandra Palace, before Trump responded by winning five frames on the spin.

After getting it back to 5-5 and forcing a decider, Wilson made a strong start, pocketing 55.

However, a red to the middle pocket hit the jaws and allowed Trump back to the table, where he cleaned up to progress to the quarter-finals.

Speaking to Eurosport after the match, Wilson said: “I’m absolutely sick. I could be a robot and try and be professional but I’m fuming to be honest. I should never have lost that match.”

Reflecting on the final frame, Wilson said he “can’t believe” he left Trump with a gap to exploit.

‘Significant’ – Wilson in disbelief as he misses red in deciding frame

“Every credit to Judd. It’s hard to hold yourself together, even if the balls are there so every credit to him,” he said.

As if taking on the world No. 2 was not enough to occupy his mind, Wilson admitted other things were distracting him at Alexandra Palace.

“I remember playing a safety shot off a green and, no one will be aware of it but as I’ve left it over the middle pocket, a fly landed on my head,” he said.

“It’s completely put me off the shot and I’ve double hit the green. But the venue’s that good I don’t mind having to deal with it. It is what it is.”

Wilson’s children were watching on as their dad’s big chance for a famous victory surpassed him, but he hopes they learn from it.

“It’s all really good experience for my kids,” he added. “If they want to take up this sport, which I think at least one of them does, it’s just great experience. Hopefully a kick in the teeth like that will teach them!

‘What a battle’ – Trump completes clearance to win deciding frame against Wilson

“I always think I’m so close. You’re playing the defending champion and he’s nicked it on the black so you can’t be doing too much wrong but I don’t want to just be here losing 6-5 on the black. I want to be winning these events. This is what I’ve turned professional for.”

Bitterly disappointed, Wilson added that he might need to take some time away to recover.

“I think I’m going to go and hibernate for two weeks,” he said.
