Maurizio Bormolini and Ramona Hofmeister deny Austria home parallel slalom wins at Snowboard World Cup in Bad Gastein

Maurizio Bormolini beat out four Austrians gunning for a home win in the snowboard parallel slalom World Cup to take victory in Bad Gastein.

In the women’s event, Germany’s Ramona Theresia Hofmeister triumphed over Sabine Schoeffman for her second parallel slalom win of the campaign.

Bormolini came through the knockout stages of the competition unscathed, with his quarter-final opponent Stefan Baumeister failing to finish.

He had exactly a second’s advantage over Austria’s Fabian Obmann in the last four, before beating Arvid Auner by 0.14 seconds in the final.

Auner had advanced to the last two after his compatriot Benjamin Karl did not finish their semi-final, with Obmann winning bronze by default as Benjamin was unable to recover in time for the small final.

Karl’s fourth place means the gap between him and Bormolini in the overall standings has narrowed, with the Italian climbing to second place and sitting 34 points behind Karl.

Meanwhile Hofmeister was able to extend her lead in the overall standings to 95 points as nearest challenger Lucia Dalmasso failed to make it out of the last 16.

She was beaten by Italian teammate Jasmin Coratti who claimed bronze, finishing 0.96 seconds ahead of Julie Zogg of Switzerland in the small final.

Hofmeister triumphed in the final by just 0.18 seconds ahead of her Austrian opponent Schoeffman who climbed to third in the overall World Cup standings.

Action continues tomorrow in Bad Gastein with the mixed parallel slalom team event.
