Meghan Markle on Queen Elizabeth’s death, Netflix docuseries

Meghan Markle is opening up about grief, being misunderstood and her Netflix show.

In a new interview with Variety, Markle discusses her mourning period following the death of Queen Elizabeth, saying she’s “grateful” for the love and support and that she was able to be with her husband, Prince Harry, at the time.

“What’s so beautiful is to look at the legacy that his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts,” the 41-year-old Duchess said. “Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like.”

Though it’s been a “complicated” time mourning the loss of Her Royal Highness, Markle and Prince Harry, 38, are trying to have a positive outlook, remembering that the Queen is now with her husband, Prince Philip. 

Markle expressed her “deep gratitude” to be able to get to know the Queen and reflected on the first official engagement they did together.

“I feel fortunate. And I continue to be proud to have had a nice warmth with the matriarch of the family,” she shared.

The passing of Queen Elizabeth has left Markle and Harry with a new perspective on what they hope to focus on in the days to come.

“Right now, we feel energized and excited about all of the things we’ve been building toward. We’re also focused on our foundation. So much of the work we do includes the philanthropic space,” she shared.

She’s also hoping her podcast “Archetypes” will show how she’s a “real person.”

“I think that what happens, looking in from the outside, when there is this much noise, is that you become dehumanized,” she said. “But if you remember that someone is a human being, then you don’t treat them, talk about them, look at them the same way. My hope for “Archetypes” is that people come out thinking, ‘Oh! She’s a real person! She laughs and asks questions and approaches things with curiosity.’”

The Duchess admitted that it’s important to her to feel understood and seen by other people.

“People just want to be seen. That is also where representation comes into play,” she said.

Markle claims to be trusting and open, which is how she finds herself able to get on in a world full of nuance.

“I have to remember that I don’t ever want to become so jaded that that piece of me goes away. So despite any of those things? Onward. I can survive it,” Markle said.

Markle even shared some things that make her a “real person” and more than just a Duchess, including that she’s a fan of “Jeopardy!,” she plays Wordle in bed while enjoying a glass of wine, she and Harry commute two whole hours to Los Angeles — and even that In-N-Out knows their order.

A Netflix docuseries on the royal couple is also in their future, directed by Liz Garbus — a director that Markle has “long admired.”

“It’s nice to be able to trust someone with our story — a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired — even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it,” the Duchess admitted. “But that’s not why we’re telling it. We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens.”

The docuseries made Markle reminisce on her time on “Suits” and being around creativity — something her Royal husband has never got to experience. 

“It’s so amazing to be around so much creative energy and to see how people work together and share their own points of view. That’s been really fun,” she said.
