Memorial proposed for Grenfell Tower
The site of London’s Grenfell Tower, where 72 people were killed in a fire, may become a memorial to the victims.
Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission has circulated pamphlets to nearby residents, proposing a new memorial, complete with a garden, be built in the building’s place, according to The Guardian.
The current 24-story structure is heavily damaged from the 2017 fire and covered by a protective wrapping. The most significant damage is above the 10th floor, government officials warned.
The commission said in a report that it would be doing its own independent assessment of the damage to “understand what could be possible,” which includes potentially using parts of the structure in the memorial.
“Whether or not it is viable to use the structure or parts of Grenfell Tower as part of the memorial, the commission recommends that height and visibility should be considered within the future designs for the memorial,” according to The Guardian, which viewed the 50-page report.
“We encourage a creative approach to how this could be achieved including the possibility of using light or other ways to create the appearance of height,”
In addition, the commission has proposed a garden for people to “remember and reflect, both individually and communally, on who and what we have lost.”
The space would be restrictive in terms of what can happen within its confines. The memorial is meant to “evoke community, love, hope, sadness and those who were taken from us,” the pamphlet reportedly said, and be a communal place to grieve.
Design mockups are expected to be drawn up in the spring, and the commission said it must “reflect the rich mix of faiths and cultural backgrounds that makes up the Grenfell community.”
If a memorial is approved, construction will more than likely start in 2026, The Guardian reported, and it would be looked after by the royal parks.
The tower went up in flames in 2017.
The youngest victim was a premature baby who died at birth to a mother who was hospitalized with smoke injures.
More than 200 escaped the fire.
