Michigan gov candidate Tudor Dixon makes campaign joke of Whitmer kidnap plot

Tudor Dixon, Michigan’s Trump-backed GOP candidate for governor, needled Gov. Gretchen Whitmer repeatedly Friday with jokes about a 2020 scheme to kidnap her — drawing Democrats’ ire.

“The sad thing is that Gretchen will tie your hands, put a gun to your head, and ask if you’re ready to talk,” Dixon — who has made a campaign issue of Whitmer’s heavy-handed COVID lockdowns — said at a Troy, Mich. fund-raiser that featured Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway.

“For someone so worried about being kidnapped, Gretchen Whitmer sure is good at taking business hostage and holding it for ransom,” Dixon added, to applause and cheers from the crowd.

Democrats howled in protest.

“She’s completely unfit to lead Michigan,” the Democratic Governors Association tweeted.

“For someone so worried about being kidnapped, Gretchen Whitmer sure is good at taking business hostage and holding it for ransom,” Dixon said.

The kidnap plot was “no laughing matter,” said Whitman campaign spokesperson Maeve Coyle.

“Gov. Whitmer has faced serious threats to her safety and her life,” Coyle said. “The fact that Tudor Dixon thinks it’s a joke shows that she is absolutely unfit to serve in public office.

Fourteen people were arrested in connection with a plot to kidnap Whitmer in 2020. Two of them were convicted last month on charges of kidnapping conspiracy and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction.

According to reports, fourteen people were arrested in connection with a plot to kidnap Gov. Whitmer in 2020.

But two others were acquitted in April after their defense attorneys argued that FBI informants had devised the kidnapping plan and then talked them into joining it.

At a second Dixon rally Friday in Muskegon, Donald Trump Jr. amplified that theme, calling the 2020 scheme a “fake kidnap plot orchestrated by the FBI.”

Dixon piled on, riffing that Whitmer looked like she would “rather be kidnapped by the FBI” during a meeting with President Joe Biden.

“Yeah, the media is like, ‘Oh my gosh, she did it again,’” she noted with a smirk.
