Michigan mom Jennifer Flewellen attends football game after five-year coma

The star of a Michigan high school football team during its senior night game was not one of the athletes — but a mom of three who recently woke up from a five-year coma.

Jennifer Flewellen wowed an entire community for a second time on Oct. 20 when she appeared on the sidelines to cheer on her 18-year-old son, just 15 months after waking up from her years-long slumber.

“Nobody expected her to wake up,” Peggy Means, Flewellen’s mom, told WNDU.

“We were told all along that she has anoxia and that the brain damage, she’ll never wake up, but you never say never.”

The 41-year-old mother of three suffered catastrophic injuries from a September 2017 car crash in which she swerved across a roadway and struck a utility pole.

She was found unconscious at the scene and remained in a coma for 4 years and 11 months, making her recovery extraordinary and prompting doctors to call her a “living miracle.”

Flewellen’s return to the field was long-awaited — the community remembered her as a dedicated mom who was always the loudest cheerleader standing along the sidelines.

“She really pushed them, and she was a big screamer,” Means said. “Everybody that knew Jenn, she was very loud. They (her kids) used to say, ‘I couldn’t even hear my coach, Mom. You were louder than the coach.’”

According to Means, her daughter put her three sons in football as soon as possible to keep them out of trouble.

She was forced to miss her elder two sons’ senior night games during her five years in a coma but was eager to watch her youngest steal the show for his Niles High School team.

Julian made sure to mark the special occasion by scoring the game’s opening touchdown on his team’s home turf against the undefeated Paw Paw.

He then scored another three touchdowns, leading his team to a 56-18 victory.

“It’s nothing short of a miracle she’s here tonight for her youngest son’s senior night,” lifelong friend Cassie Lee told the outlet.

“Nobody expected her to wake up,” said Flewellen’s mom, Peggy Means.

Another friend said the community is “still in shock” Flewellen was there to watch the game.

“Just having the opportunity to have her here to support him and letting everyone know that she is thriving and she’s continuing to get better,” Sara Macon said.

According to WNDU, Flewellen has been living at home since July, about 11 months after she miraculously woke up from her coma.
