Michigan vigilante ‘Boopac Shakur’ fatally shot in confrontation with teens
A Michigan vigilante known on social media as “Boopac Shakur” has died after he shot when he confronted two teens over the weekend, police said.
Robert Wayne Lee, 40, who has thousands of followers on his social media accounts, was at Universal Coney Island in Pontiac, where he confronted the two males sitting at a table in the eatery about 10:30 p.m. Friday, Fox 2 Detroit reported, citing the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
He accused one of the teens of being a pedophile and punched him, police said.
“There were two people at the table, one he was mostly focused on and talking to and became heated with was not the individual who shot him — it was the other person on the opposite side of the table,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, according to the news outlet.
The 18-year-old suspect who was punched pulled out a knife, while the other – a 17-year-old boy – shot Lee several times with a handgun, according to police.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries, officials said.
The teens fled but were arrested Saturday afternoon by detectives from the sheriff’s office and gun violence task force agents from the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Detroit News reported.
The suspects are believed to be Pontiac residents but have not been identified. Criminal charges against the pair were pending.
“I am extremely proud of the work of our Pontiac substation team,” Bouchard said, according to the news outlet. “Within hours, they have taken two individuals into custody in connection with this homicide.”
Although Lee’s “one-man crusade has led to the arrest and criminal charges being filed against several men, he has also mistakenly identified someone as a sexual predator who was not,” the sheriff said in a release.
“While we certainly understand his desire to hold child predators accountable, many times well intentioned individuals who engaged in this don’t know the standard of evidence required for convictions and often underestimate the potential for violence confronting a suspected predator,” he said.
“They feel trapped and often lash out violently. When we have arrested predators in such circumstances, they have rammed police cars and exhibited other violent behavior in an attempt to escape,” Bouchard added.
On one occasion, Lee’s efforts led to a former cop facing charges, a police spokesperson told CNN.
Lee had 11,000 followers on his Facebook page, where he was known as “Boopac Shakur.”
A GoFundMe page for Lee described the intrepid vigilante as a “beacon of light” and “hometown hero.”
“Robert dedicated his life to protecting the innocence of our children from those with malicious intentions. Through his courageous efforts, he successfully exposed 132 predators who sought to harm our community’s youth,” it said.
“Robert was not only a defender of the innocent; he was a beloved father to his daughter Ah,’vyana. As she navigates the uncharted waters of life without her hero father, we aim to honor Robert’s memory and support Ah’vyana through this challenging journey,” the fundraiser added.
Lee, who was involved with a group called Dad’s Against Predators, played a role in a sting operation that led to charges against an Oakland County deputy who has since been fired, Fox 2 Detroit reported.
