Mikaela Shiffrin poised to equal Ingemar Stenmark World Cup record of 86 wins at Spindleruv Mlyn after fine first run

Mikaela Shiffrin looks poised to equal the legendary Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup wins after building a healthy lead after the first slalom at Spindleruv Mlyn.

The 27-year-old looks in great shape to claim her 12th World Cup win of the season after building a mighty 0.67 lead over Germany’s Lena Duerr. Croatian teenager Zrinka Ljutic was third, 0.85 adrift of the leader.

Shiffrin – who was in a different league from the rest of the competition – was particularly quick on the flat.

The American had shared the women’s record of 82 wins with former team-mate Lindsey Vonn before her further successes in Italy earlier this week and adding a third in Czech Republic on Saturday that took her to 85 victories.

Only once in Shiffrin’s career has she won more than 12 races in a single season – back in 2018-19 when she claimed a record 17.

Stenmark holds the current record of 86 World Cup victories having dominated in slalom and giant slalom during the 1970s and 80s.

The second slalom in the Czech resort of Spindleruv Mlyn commences at 11am (GMT).
