More people ‘treat themselves’ now than ever before: poll
Carpe diem, as they say.
Two-thirds of Americans claim they have adopted a “seize the day” mindset ever since the onset of the pandemic, a new survey says.
Conducted by OnePoll for JaM Cellars, the poll of 2,000 Americans, age 21 and over, also concluded that 64% are living more in the moment, while 74% are more focused on the future compared to pre-pandemic times.
In fact, the pandemic shifted their mindsets so much that now 62% of respondents reported that they “treat themselves” more than ever before.
On average, people reward themselves six times per month — but answers were divided on what exactly qualified as pampered treatment.
While 32% defined it as “something enjoyable,” 24% said they considered the “fun factor” of whatever the treat is. Enjoying “me time” (25%), cracking open a favorite drink (21%) and indulging in some online shopping (21%) were all ways participants treat themselves.
Typically, people said they’re more apt to treat themselves on special occasions (40%), but 39% said they’re looking for a reward every weekend — or even during the week. About two-thirds (66%) of people said they’re more likely to treat themselves during the week now, claiming it makes it feel “more special” (68%).
For $83 — the average cost of a “treat” — that reward should be exceptional, although 74% of people admitted the higher cost doesn’t equal more happiness.
Food (43%), clothing (35%) and experiences (31%) topped the list of ways people treated themselves, but for people opting for a less costly way to let loose, 26% said they would indulge in their favorite wine.
“It’s great to see that more Americans than ever are choosing to live their best lives every day. We’ve realized we don’t have to wait for special occasions, birthday gatherings, or even the weekend to enjoy life or a glass of your favorite wine,” said Michele Truchard, co-founder of JaM Cellars.
“Importantly, indulgences that bring you joy, shouldn’t have to break the bank. Great quality, easy-to-love, affordable wines can make any day more delicious,” she added.
Wine seemed to increase in popularity post-pandemic, with 62% of participants admitting they enjoy wine more now than three years ago, and 74% are more likely to crack open a bottle on a weekday. While red wine (58%) reigns as the general favorite, white (51%) and sparkling (45%) varieties fall right behind.
Anyway, what better way to spend time with your loved ones than over a shared bottle of your favorite wine? At least that’s what 33% of respondents thought, while 27% said wine is best enjoyed on any weekend and 23% felt the same about enjoying the beverage on any weeknight.
Others, meanwhile, would rather wind down with a glass as part of “me time” (24%), a shift from pre-pandemic times, per the poll. In fact, 72% of participants said they’re more likely to pop a cork alone compared to three years ago.
True to their carpe diem mindset, 70% of respondents also said they’d rather indulge now instead of saving it for later, with 72% feeling that any kind of treat instantly boosts their mood.
“I think treating yourself has become an important part of self-care since the pandemic lockdowns. A lot of people have leveled up how they eat and drink and become more selective how they spend their time and money,” said Truchard. “Life’s simple pleasures are a wonderful way to make the most of life and wine o’clock, and America seems to agree. Cheers to that!”
