More Than 14,000 Strollers Recalled After Child’s Fingertip Amputated

More than 14,000 UPPAbaby brand strollers were recalled on Thursday after a child’s fingertip became caught in a brake and was amputated, according to a federal agency.

The All-Terrain RIDGE Jogging Stroller rear disc brakes have openings that “can cause amputation or laceration if a non-occupant child’s fingertip gets caught in the openings while the stroller is in use,” the agency, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said.

People are encouraged to stop using the strollers and contact the company to receive free replacement brake discs. The serial number of the recalled product, which is on the right side of the stroller frame above the rear wheel, begins with 1401RDGUS.

Only one incident has been reported, and the child was not in the stroller when it happened, the commission said.

The stroller, which retailed for about $600, was sold at numerous stores, including BuyBuyBaby, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn Kids and Amazon. It was manufactured from October 2021 through August 2022, the commission said.

The company said in a statement that extensive testing is conducted on its products and that this line of strollers had passed each test.

The company said it was voluntarily recalling this line of strollers, which have an extendable canopy with a mesh window and a zipper pocket, disc hand brakes and an adjustable handlebar with a wrist strap.

“Our top priority at UPPAbaby is the safety of children,” the company said. “We take all product inquiries very seriously. Based on one consumer report to us, we believe the injury is likely due to consumer misuse.”
