Murdaugh’s lawyers expected to file motion in bid for new murder trial

Attorneys for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh plan to push for a new trial in the disgraced legal scion’s double-homicide case based on “discovered evidence,” according to reports.

Murdaugh’s lawyers Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin are expected to file a motion calling for a new trial six months after a South Carolina jury found him guilty of fatally shooting his wife Maggie and their younger son Paul in May 2021.

He’s currently behind bars after he was sentenced to two life terms, however, he’s maintained his innocence.

The lawyers scheduled a news conference for Tuesday when they will provide more details surrounding the planned motion, a spokesperson for Harpootlian and Griffin told WCSC.

The motion is based on “discovered evidence” and is expected to be released at the news conference, the spokesperson told the local station.

The pair of lawyers are expected to detail what led them to the motion they intend on presenting.

It’ll be held on the grounds of the South Carolina State House near the Court of Appeals, WYFF reported.

The bid for the new trial comes after Murdaugh, 55, had his prison phone and tablet access cut off in August after his lawyer recorded a conversation for an upcoming documentary.

Murdaugh is also facing a slew of other state charges for financial crimes, though he is expected to plead guilty in federal court to stealing nearly $8 million from his clients this month to avoid a trial.
