Neymar: PSG star set for ‘further tests’ on ankle ligament damage, big doubt for Bayern Munich clash

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Neymar sprained his ankle and suffered ligament damage in their dramatic 4-3 victory over Lille on Sunday.

The French champions confirmed the news in a statement after the Brazilian went down after a challenge from Benjamin Andre.

Neymar went over on his ankle following a tackle by the Lille captain and was subsequently stretchered off the pitch at the Parc des Princes.

PSG said in their statement: “Additional tests today have confirmed that Neymar Jr has sprained his ankle, with some ligament damage.

“He will undergo further tests at the start of next week.”

The 31-year-old has had several different ankle injuries since the 2013/14 season, and his future in the French capital remains in doubt.

He is under contract at the club until 2027, and has been linked with moves away to a number of clubs that include Newcastle and Chelsea.

PSG have been in faltering form since the turn of the year, with that 4-3 win over Lille on Sunday ending a run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions.

Among those losses included a 2-1 defeat to Marseille in the French Cup, while the Ligue 1 title race is proving to be far from a formality, with Christophe Galtier’s side sitting only five points clear at the top of the table.

They also face an uphill task to reach the Champions League quarter-finals following a 1-0 first-leg defeat at home to Bayern Munich.

Galtier’s men now face a daunting trip to the Allianz Arena in a bid to overturn that deficit on March 8.

There is also a worry that Neymar’s absence will increase the pressure on Kylian Mbappe, who has only just recovered from a thigh injury.

‘There’s still hope for PSG’ – Mbappe optimistic despite defeat to Bayern

The 24-year-old surprisingly came off the bench in that aforementioned defeat to Bayern, and admitted to reporters that he “shouldn’t have come back” so early.

Speaking afterwards, Mbappe said: “I’m not 100% but I felt good enough to try to help my friends and play a little bit. Basically, I shouldn’t have come back.

“I tried everything, tried to put everything on my side so as not to have any regrets. I would have liked to play this game [in full].

“These are matches that we want to play, for which we work. Watching from the sidelines is very difficult. Today, I only had 30 minutes to give. I gave everything. I will try to recover to be as efficient as possible.”

PSG will now focus on a huge top-of-the-table clash against Marseille on Sunday at the Stade Velodrome.
