Nicolas Cage shaved his teeth to become Dracula in ‘Renfield’

Nicolas Cage is a cut above the rest.

The Oscar winner, 59, went to extreme lengths to become Count Dracula in the comedy-horror “Renfield.”

The film’s makeup artist Christien Tinsley revealed that Cage trimmed his teeth and wore 3-D printed dentures for his vampire character.

“We shaved Nic’s teeth down and the dentures were fitted so as not to impede on Nic’s speech and allow full freedom,” Tinsley told Variety Thursday.

“Nic wanted to emote and annunciate properly, so it was important the veneers were thin,” he said, explaining that the technology allowed him to make quick adjustments to the sharp dentures when needed.

In order to put the 3-D printing to good use, Tinsley had to scan Cage’s teeth and then digitally sculpt them so they could fit in his mouth perfectly.

The “National Treasure” actor also spent over three hours daily in the hair and makeup chair.

“It was a full head of prosthetics, dentures, full body, torso, arms, hands and nails,” Tinsley noted. “Those take time.”

Cage also stayed in character for the whole time they were shooting the flick, even when the camera wasn’t on him.

Director Chris McKay told Insider last month that the actor was portraying the iconic vamp even during off-camera conversations.

“Whatever scene we did he would still be 100% living in that attitude after we stopped shooting,” McKay said. “So if he’s a little frosty in the scene he’s going to have a little bit of that between takes. But still up for whatever we were doing.” 

However, Cage denied the accusation shortly after, telling the Hollywood Reporter: “I just don’t have that recollection. I don’t know why Chris said that.”

“I had a lot of laughs in between takes with both Chris McKay and Nick Hoult, so maybe that was his experience, maybe because I still had the fangs in my mouth that made me speak a certain way, but that wasn’t my experience,” the Golden Globe winner continued.

“Renfield” will be biting its way into theaters on April 14 and also stars Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Hoult portrays Dracula’s miserable servant R. M. Renfield, who falls in love with a New Orleans cop in the present day and must keep the Gothic figure away from his relationship so he doesn’t suck the life out of it.

Cage discussed his new film with The Post earlier this week, gushing over his love of the mix of comedy and scary stories.

“My favorite movies blend comedy with horror,” he said. “As a teenager, I saw ‘An American Werewolf in London.’ I laughed then screamed. I like being kept off-guard. ‘Renfield’ and its rage required four different Dracula looks.”

Martinez — who portrays officer Chris Marcos in “Renfield” — joked at the film’s New York City premiere on March 28 that he kept his distance from the “Leaving Las Vegas” star while shooting.

He told Page Six that he didn’t want to “piss off” Cage, so he “laid low.”

“He was very much in the zone when we did this movie,” Martinez dished. “Like, I couldn’t tell who was Dracula and who Nic Cage was. He was very serious.”
