Nils Allegre stuns favourites with maiden super-G triumph at Garmisch-Partenkirchen Alpine Ski World Cup

Nils Allegre pulled off a stunning super-G success in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to land his first career Alpine Ski World Cup victory.

The 30-year-old Frenchman had never previously occupied a World Cup podium but his time of 1:11.92 was enough to take the spoils as the favourites fell by the wayside.

Allegre said: “What happened? I don’t know.

“I felt really bad this morning, I had no power.

“But I saw Cyprien [Sarrazin] and I said to myself, ‘Today it’s not his day, it’s mine, so let’s push.’ Normally I’m not thinking like this but I don’t know why today I felt like this.

“I had a very good feeling on the salty snow. I know my skis are one of the best in these conditions.”

Italian Guglielmo Bosca, who suffered a string of serious injuries early in his career, finished second and could scarcely hide his delight at a first World Cup podium of his own.

“Coming here, scoring a podium, it satisfies me so much, it’s really what I was aiming (for) when I came back from injury, so it’s like a fulfilment for me now,” he said.

“Lately I’m skiing quite good, so I was confident that I can ski fast and keep myself in the front. But coming down and seeing the green light was actually amazing.”

Switzerland’s Loic Meillard took bronze, edging out his fellow countryman and runaway World Cup leader Marco Odermatt, who missed out on what would have been a record-breaking 13th super-G podium by 0.03 seconds.

The in-form Sarazzin, meanwhile, finished down in 11th and will look for improvement in Sunday’s super-G.
