North Dakota police officer killed, 2 cops critical in shooting that left suspect dead
A police officer was killed and two other officers are in critical condition after a man opened fire on a North Dakota street on Friday.
The shooting unfolded at an intersection in Fargo, N.D. just before 3 p.m. as officers were responding to the scene of a car crash, according to KFGO.
Officers returned gunfire, killing the suspect, who has yet to be identified.
Fargo police said a fifth person sustained “serious injuries” in the shooting.
“A total of five individuals sustained injuries in this incident,” police said in a statement late Friday night. “The Fargo Police Department can confirm that one of its officers has died as a result of sustained injuries and two remain in critical condition this evening. Two other involved civilians sustained serious injuries, including the suspect who has died as a result of the shooting.”
The identities of the officers and fifth victim were not being released pending notification of families.
A procession for the fallen officer took place Friday evening as hundreds of squad cars made their way through the city.
Witnesses to the carnage claim their vehicles were struck by bullets as they were passing through the area.
“I saw the traffic stop and as soon as I drove, shots were fired and I saw the cops go down,” Shannon Nichole told the radio station. “My airbag went off and the bullet went through my driver’s door.”
A second witness was driving with her 22-year-old daughter when she saw the man pull out a gun and fire at the officers.
“He proceeds to aim it and you just hear the bullets go off, and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God! He’s shooting!” Chenoa Peterson told the Associated Press.
Sanford Medical Center said it was receiving patients relating to the shooting, according to AP.
Fargo police confirmed a residential area had been evacuated as an investigation was taking place to “gather evidence and intelligence related to this afternoon’s critical incident.”
The second scene being investigated is about 2 miles south of where the deadly shooting took place.
A press conference was announced for Saturday afternoon at the Fargo City Hall.
