Novak Djokovic ’emotional’ after Melbourne welcome ahead of Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios wants ‘Wimbledon payback’

Novak Djokovic was given a very warm welcome back to Melbourne and admitted that the reception made him “emotional” ahead of his match with Nick Kyrgios.

The 35-year-old is targeting a record-extending 10th triumph at Melbourne Park this month after having missed out on defending his title last year due to being deported over his Covid-19 vaccine status. It was a debacle he wanted to move on from, and he certainly got the reception he was hoping for when he walked out on Rod Laver Arena once more.

Asked about the ovation from the fans and what it meant to be back on the court he has had so much success on over the years, Djokovic was visibly emotional as he reflected on what it all felt like for him.

“I’m very happy, thank you so much,” he said to the crowd in his pre-match interview, looking up with a big smile.

“I feel a bit emotional right now, to be honest. I was really looking forward to coming back to this court, so thank you, guys, for coming out tonight for a great cause.

Asked about his hamstring injury with the area of his leg taped up for the match, Djokovic was very positive.

“Yeah, I’m feeling good; feeling good,” he said.

Then joking about Kyrgios, he added: “This is the match I care only about right now: Nick! Nick is in my thoughts, he is in my prayers!”

Kyrgios was also left blown away by the support he received as he walked out for the match which, as he pointed out, sold out in just 58 minutes with fans desperate to see the two players lock horns.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m nervous standing back out here!” he said.

“A kid from Canberra growing up and then selling out this arena in 58 minutes with one of the best players in the world, it’s amazing!

“It’s a very special moment for me. I know the last couple of years in Melbourne it’s been a struggle.”

Asked about his ankle injury, he responded: “I’m not going to give him any insight into how my body is feeling, but I am coming at him hot tonight!

“He plays a lot more tennis than I do so I know he is going to manage his body a little bit differently, but let’s have some fun and hope we pull up alright.
