Novak Djokovic will ‘strive to more make history’ at 2023 Wimbledon after win over Jordan Thompson

Novak Djokovic said that he was continuing to “strive to make more history” at Wimbledon after defeating Jordan Thomspon in straight sets.

The Serbian is looking to extend his Grand Slam record, with 23 already under his belt and his closest rival, Rafael Nadal, out of action for the foreseeable future.

Currently ranked No. 2, a strong showing would help him challenge current No. 1 incumbent Carlos Alcaraz for the lead position in the rankings.

Without Nadal present, Djokovic was asked if he felt less pressure, and he responded that he felt not just pressure from spectators, but also from his own desire to keep breaking records.

He said at his post-match press conference: “Every time I walk out on the court, particularly in Grand Slams and center courts, I feel, of course, tremendous pressure and expectations from myself, from people around that are watching live or on TV, the whole tennis world, right?

“It’s a feeling that I’m used to by now, and it’s something that I also embrace because it’s giving me further motivation to strive to make more history.

“I don’t think it’s ever going to change as long as I’m playing really. Regardless of the Grand Slam count fact, I still want to make my own results and my own journey. I think that’s what drives me most nowadays.”

Earlier, on the BBC, after his win, Djokovic praised his Australian opponent, saying: “I don’t know if I wanted to meet [Thompson] this early in the tournament. Congratulations to him for a great performance. He was unlucky in the second set, he had some chances, he played a great match and he deserves a big round of applause for sure.”

Asked about his feelings on the location of his win, he added: “Centre Court has been the most special court, without a doubt, for our tennis history. We know the tradition, know how long Wimbledon dates back.

“It sounds like a cliche but I truly try to marvel and enjoy every moment on this court. It’s a huge privilege, especially at this age and stage of my career to try and push forward with the young guns. I don’t know how far and long that is going to take but so far so good.

“We have a very romantic and special relationship, this court and I.”
