Olympic champion Erin Jackson extends impressive record in Beijing with second World Cup triumph

Olympic champion Erin Jackson soared to her second ISU Speed Skating World Cup gold in three days with another blistering 500m triumph in Beijing.

She followed it up 48 hours later with another dominant display on the same Chinese ice she made history on last year.

Jackson had become the first black woman to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual event when she sped to the summit of the podium in Beijing just over 18 months ago.

And she extended her red-hot record at the National Speed Skating Oval this weekend by beating the Netherlands’ Jutta Leerdam and South Korea’s Kim Min-sum to gold.

Later in the day on the final afternoon of action in the Chinese capital, three-time Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis clinched men’s 1000m glory ahead of Norwegian Haavard Lorentzen and China’s Ning Zongyan.

The Dutch star claimed 1500m gold earlier in the weekend and cemented his hegemony over the shorter distance with another slick performance.

Elsewhere, Norway’s Ragne Wiklund grabbed gold in the women’s 3000m before Naomi Verkerk, Helga Drost and Antoinette Rijpma-de Jonga steered the Netherlands to an impressive women’s team triumph.

And in the final race of the second World Cup event of the season, Italians reigned supreme as Andrea Giovannini and Daniele Di Stefano took men’s mass start gold and silver ahead of Olympic champion Bart Swings.
