One dead, another missing after jump from ‘Jaws Bridge’

A swimmer was found dead Monday and another is missing after leaping from the “Jaws Bridge” in Martha’s Vineyard that was featured in pivotal scenes in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 shark thriller, officials said.

The pair was among four friends who were reported missing while swimming just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday, a Coast Guard spokesperson told The Post.

“Thankfully, two of them were recovered fairly quickly with no injuries,” the spokesperson said.

“We searched through the night for the other two,” who were aged 21 and 27, the rep said.

The body of one was found just before 6:30 a.m. Monday “and we are still searching for the other swimmer,” the spokesperson said.

Massachusetts State Police also had aircraft and boats helping the search, with Edgartown Fire Department and Dukes County Sheriff’s Office also joining in.

It was not immediately clear what the cause of death was nor how the four initially got into trouble, the rep stressed.

However, the bridge is “a very popular swimming spot” and “swimming anywhere at night can be dangerous,” the spokesperson stressed.

While officially named the American Legion Memorial Bridge, it is so widely known as the “Jaws Bridge” that it was referred to as such in messages sent out about the search by police and coast guards.

Despite its terrifying reputation from Spielberg’s blockbuster, it has become a local attraction for swimmers, with people lining up to dive in defiance of signs warning against it.

So far, there is no suggestion that sharks were involved in Monday’s tragic recovery.
