‘One game from immortality’ – Alan Shearer leads reaction as City claim second leg of treble with FA Cup win
That victory, inspired by two Ilkay Gundogan’s goals, gave City the FA Cup alongside the Premier League title that they successfully defended this season.
With next Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan looming, City now stand an excellent chance of becoming just the second English team to win the Treble.

Only United, back in 1999, have managed to claim all three major titles in the same season but City now stand on the verge of joining that most elite of groups.
Pundit Alan Shearer summed up the stakes after City’s victory at Wembley towards the end of the BBC’s coverage.
He said: “It’s one game from immortality for these Manchester City boys. The fans of Manchester City football club will remember them for years to come. They are on the verge of an incredible achievement.”
Shearer also took to Twitter to add his voice to a chorus of frustration at the awarding of a penalty to United for a handball by Jack Grealish.
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton took the case for City’s place in history even further than Shearer.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “This team has strength and depth. They have that belief. This is a side that we will look back at as one of the greatest ever teams. The debate will be which is the best Treble winning team?”
Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher singled out John Stones for praise after a faultless display at the base of City’s midfield, identifying a key strength ahead of next weekend’s date with destiny.
City midfielder Grealish was among the most delighted people at Wembley following his involvement in United’s equaliser, but admitted that he too has his eyes on the Champions League title.
He said: “Everyone is confident, we’ve got older, more experienced lads and the younger lads are learning too. We’ll have a good night tonight and then straight back at it on Sunday and Monday for a big game next week.”
Speaking to ITV, Grealish summed it up by saying: “I think the sky’s the limit. I’ve never played in a team like this, we have everything.”
Inter will finish their domestic campaign at least 15 points behind Serie A champions Napoli, and have enjoyed a relatively unobstructed run to the final in Istanbul but are now the only thing standing between Pep Guardiola’s side an historic achievement.
