Open Championship Day 2 as it happened: Rory McIlroy in mix, Cameron Smith leads, Tiger Woods misses cut as tears flow

A world-class field chase the Claret Jug at St Andrews, but 15-time major winner Tiger Woods has a mountain to climb to make the cut after carding 78 on a poor opening day.
In stark contrast, 2014 Open champion Rory McIlroy is well placed to challenge for the title following an opening round of 66.

Collin Morikawa – who opened with a level-par round of 72 – is attempting to be the first player to successfully defend the Claret Jug since Padraig Harrington in 2008.

20:46 – Cut set to fall at even par

And that proved too much for defending champion Collin Morikawa, whose birdie at the last saw him miss the cut at +1 after a 2nd round 73.

It has been a magical day, but we will back around lunchtime tomorrow to continue our coverage of this glorious 150th Open Championship.

Thanks for joining us today.

20:44 – 150TH OPEN LATEST LEADERBOARD

  • 1 Cameron Smith -13 18
  • 2 Cameron Young -11 18
  • 3 Rory McIlroy -10 18
  • 3 Viktor Hovland -10 18
  • 5 Dustin Johnson -9 18
  • 6 Scottie Scheffler -8 18
  • 6 Tyrrell Hatton -8 18

20:36 – Hovland with classy birdie on 18

The Norwegian player is going to sign for a round of 66 and join McIlroy on -10 for the tournament. This is going to be a real shoot-out over the weekend with so much talent at the top of this leaderboard.

20:29 – Bit too much juice from Rory

A tricky one coming back for birdie to join Cameron Young on -11 in second spot, but he can’t slot the putt coming back. Just the par 4 for Rory. A round of 68 to go with his opening 66. He is -10 for two rounds, three shots off the lead. Fine playing.

20:23 – Rory in the Valley of Sin

A brilliant drive up the last. Trickles down into the Valley of Sin on 18, but an up and down from there will see move to -11 and potentially in the final group tomorrow.

20:18 – A dream shot for Viktor Hovland

Big Viktor is well in the hunt out there.

20:13 – Birdie for Rory on 17

What a moment that is for the Northern Irishman. Hollywood moment for the Holywood man. A birdie on one of the toughest holes in major golf. A timely 3 and he is back to -10 with the 18th to come. Played a wonderful second shot and cans the birdie from over 20 feet.

20:03 – McIlroy wallops drive down 17th

Just off the edge of the 17th fairway. Might have the option to play a low flier from the semi up the front of the green. Not a bad spot at this point of his round. Made sure he didn’t go right. Now he must avoid flirting with danger down the left.

19:55 – 150TH OPEN LATEST LEADERBOARD

  • 1 Cameron Smith -13 18
  • 2 Cameron Young -11 18
  • 3 Dustin Johnson -9 18
  • 3 Rory McIlroy -9 16
  • 3 Viktor Hovland -9 15

19:45 – Rory with safe par on 16

Much more like it from the four-time major winner. Two putts and he will accept that par. Tough drive coming up on 17. He would dearly take a 4 on the Road Hole.

19:37 – How will Cameron Smith prepare for his 3rd round?

“I think I’ve always done a pretty good job of just treating every round the same, to be honest,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a really cool experience being out there. It has been this whole week.

“But I’ve always done a really good job of just doing the same thing, going through the same process every morning, making sure I feel the same – get on the range, hit the same shots. It’s very boring, but it does the trick.”

19:34 – Rory drops a shot

That is a disappointing end to the 15th hole. Tough little putt back from six feet, but got the read wrong. Stays up and McIlroy drops back to join DJ on -9. 3 holes left. Doesn’t want to leak any more. The importance of position off the tee so important.

19:28 – Rory off the back at 15

Just could not slow that second shot down coming from the thick stuff. Morikawa chasing birdies at +2 over the closing four holes to make the cut. One big chance comes at the 18th.

19:26 – Billy Horschel piped home at the 18th

The magic of the bagpipes at the Old Course.

19:21 – No birdie for Rory on 14

Second shot left him with a tricky chip shot. Takes another three to get home and he remains at -10. No damage done, but you suspect Rory would like to get another birdie in the bag before he signs off for the evening.

19:20 – 150TH OPEN LATEST LEADERBOARD

  • 1 Cameron Smith -13 18
  • 2 Cameron Young -11 18
  • 3 Rory McIlroy -10 13
  • 4 Dustin Johnson -9 18
  • 5 Tyrrell Hatton -8 18
  • 5 Scottie Scheffler -8 18

19:13 – Lee Westwood joins the party

The former world No. 1 has produced a lovely birdie on the 17th hole. Don’t see many of them. He moves to -5. A 3-3 finish would carry him well inside the top 20. The LIV man is a popular draw in these parts. Hopefully he doesn’t run into a few Ian Poulter diehards out there.

19:06 – Can Rory find a birdie on the 14th?

This is a big opportunity to move to -11 for the tournament at the last of the par 5s. Really is. His distance control is a huge advantage on this course.

19:00 – Tiger on those unforgettable scenes at 18

‘Don’t know if I’ll play here again’ Emotional Tiger after missing the cut at St Andrews

18:59 – Birdie at the 18th for Cameron Young

That is a fantastic finish for the overnight leader. Slots in that swerving putt from 18 feet at the last to move to -11. A round of 69 to go with his opening 66. Fine play by the American rookie.

18:56 – Where is the defending champion Morikawa?

Looks like he is heading home for the weekend. Has really failed to fire this week at +3 and needs to find three strokes to make the cut. Not happened so far. Rory looks in prime position to move off the 13th hole with at least a par 4.

18:50 – Another birdie from Rory

Three birdies on the spin for the 2014 Open champion at 10, 11 and 12. And he joins overnight leader Cameron Young in a share of second place. Three strokes behind Smith with 6 holes to play. This is warming up nicely.

18:40 – 150TH OPEN LATEST LEADERBOARD

  • 1 Cameron Smith -13 18
  • 2 Cameron Young -10 16
  • 3 Dustin Johnson -9 18
  • 3 Rory McIlroy -9 11
  • 5 Tyrrell Hatton -8 18
  • 5 Scottie Scheffler -8 18
  • 5 Viktor Hovland -8 10

18:30 – Land of Down Under on top

Two Australians have enjoyed the best rounds of the day. Adam Scott’s 65 was bettered by a stroke. Smith’s 64 to go with his opening 67 sees him set the halfway record for an Open Championship at St Andrews on -13, 131 strokes.

18:25 – Smith finishes with par on 18

A magnificent round of 64 from the Australian. Opted to play the final hole in conservative fashion, but a safe two putts on the 18th green from pitching on. He leads Cameron Young by three strokes at the moment.

18:17 – McIlroy enjoys back-to-back birdies

After the 3 at 10, comes the 2 on 11. A fabulous putt from 15 foot or so. Rory suddenly up to -9 and looking in the mood with seven holes of his back 9 to play.

18:12 – Smith saves par on 17

A magnificent par save on the road hole from Smith. Eight foot or so for his 4 and he rolled that in with so much ease. Chance of carding a 63 with birdie up 18.

18:07 – McIlroy makes timely birdie

Superb effort from 20 feet with the eagle attempt on 10. Just eluded the hole. Easy birdie and Rory moves to -8, five behind leader Cameron Smith.

18:05 – A message from Tiger

18:00 – Rory drives the 10th green

Can’t keep a good man down. McIlroy out with the big stick on 10 and has drove that onto the green like a mid-iron. 376 yards reduced to a decent eagle chance today. Will have a 20 foot putt to join Dustin Johnson on -9.

17:50 – Where is the projected cut?

81 players are so far set to make the weekend action on level par. Despite leader Cameron Smith being 13 strokes clear of that cut projection as we speak. 2010 champion Louis Oosthuizen and 2016 winner Henrik Stenson are among those players who are going to miss that mark at +1.

17:45 – 150TH OPEN LATEST LEADERBOARD

  • 1 Cameron Smith -13 15
  • 2 Cameron Young -10 13
  • 3 Dustin Johnson -9 18
  • 4 Tyrrell Hatton -8 18
  • 4 Scottie Scheffler -8 18

17:37 – Bogey for McIlroy on 8

One step forward, one step back at the moment for Rory as he falls back to -7. Three putts from distance and that is frustrating. He remains at -1 for the day.

17:28 – Smith’s dream round

Heading for the 15th hole with Smith enjoying birdies on 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 10 and an eagle on 14. Four pars needed for a round of 64. Three strokes clear at the moment.

17:24 – Where eagles dare

Cameron Smith is slaying the Old Course so far today. A thrilling eagle from distance on the par-5 14th hole and the Aussie moves ahead of the crowd at -13. He is -8 for the day. Would he settle for four pars from here? Probably not. This round could yet get lower with that putter working like a wand.

17:20 – Tiger on his future at The Open

‘It was very meaningful to make it here’ – Woods after 78 in opening round of Open

17:15 – McIlroy moves to -8

Straight putt. No break and McIlroy put a confident stroke on the ball. Straight in the hole and the Northern Irishman joins the party in a tie for 4th place, 3 strokes off the lead.

  • 1 Cameron Smith -11 13
  • 2 Cameron Young -10 12

  • 4 Tyrrell Hatton -8 18
  • 4 Scottie Scheffler -8 18

17:05 – Rory with a superb approach at 7th hole

100 yards or so for McIlroy. Nips it off the turf to around five feet and stops the ball. Wonderful chance to move to -8.

16:55 – JT drains a monster putt

Justin Thomas has moved under par with this glorious effort on the 5th hole.

16:45 – Phil Mickelson set to miss cut

Lefty won’t be here at the weekend. Began his day with a birdie on 3 to get to -1, but has just suffered a double bogey at the 13th hole to go with 3 other bogeys. Drops to +4.

16:40 – McIlroy rescues birdie from par-5 5th hole

Made heavy weather of it, but sinks a testing 15 footer for birdie after his approach shot to the green came up well short. No matter. In it goes. McIlroy moves to -7.

16:28 – What happened to Padraig Harrington?

The two-time Open champion moved to -5 after opening his 2nd round with two birdies before suffering an epic collapse. Six bogeys and a double bogey saw him fall back to +3.

Meaning he will miss the cut with a second round of 78, nine strokes worse than his 1st round.

16:23 – Three groups wait to hit on 5th hole

McIlroy chatting to Shane Lowry on the 5th tee as several groups wait to hit. McIlroy then thumps a drive just short of 400 yards down there.

16:15 – Tiger explains emotions at the last

15:28 – Woods could be saying farewell to Old Course

“I’ve been coming here since 1995. I think the next one here might be 2030,” said Woods. “It felt to me like this might be my last British Open at St Andrews. I’ve been lucky enough and fortunate enough to win it twice here.

“The fans here realise what it takes to be an Open champion. They understand the game. It felt very emotional. I don’t know what my future health will be like when the Open next comes round here.”

The putter has been cold this week as Tiger can’t slot the birdie attempt from close range. A closing round of 75 from Tiger. He finishes with rounds of 78 and 75 (+9).

Fabulous and deserved reception for the player that has done so much to transform the earning capacity of golfers since he turned professional in 1996.

Tiger with a poor pace of stroke on the 17th hole. Short again with the first putt. Story of his week. Would dearly love to snake this in. And finish with a birdie. In goes the par putt from six feet. One more hole remaining for the great man. Fitzpatrick holes out for par to remain at -6.
