Oregon father arrested 10 years after newborn’s body found on recycling plant conveyor belt

A Portland father was arrested Wednesday more than 10 years after he allegedly killed his newborn daughter in a case that gripped the city, who affectionately named the girl “Baby Precious.”

Alnath Omar Oliver, 53, was charged with manslaughter, criminal mischief, rape and concealing the birth of an infant, the Portland Police Bureau announced.

Investigators believe Oliver killed “Baby Precious,” who was later revealed to be baby Amara, in 2013 in an attempt to hide his relationship with the newborn’s 15-year-old mother.

He allegedly forced the teenage girl to give birth on his apartment floor May 27 after months of preventing her from seeking medical attention before taking the newborn outside in an apparent attempt to take her to the hospital.

“He then took the child from that event from his apartment, and in the course of walking to hospital the baby passed,” Detective Brendan McGuire said at a press conference.

That’s when Oliver dumped her in a recycling bin, which was then taken by a truck to the recycling plant where her body was discovered on the conveyor belt the next morning.

The Medical Examiner quickly ruled that the baby’s death was a homicide, but was unable to identify any relatives for the next decade.

Investigators were finally able to track down Amara’s family after a blood match on her mother’s side uploaded their own 23AndMe test results to its database.

The mother has completely cooperated with investigators, McGuire said.

Tragically, she was under the impression Amara had been taken to the hospital and was still alive today.

The mother is not being charged because she herself was a victim of statutory rape, investigators said.

“While we continue to mourn the death of baby Amara, we hope this significant announcement helps our community with the healing process from this tragedy,” Chief Chuck Lovell said in a statement.
