Our Emmys 2024 predictions: Who will win?
The 75th Emmy Awards air Monday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. on Fox with host Anthony Anderson.
That means it’s that time of year where I make my choices for who will take home a golden statuette in the major categories.
My picks are based on personal preference, of course, but I’ve also factored in how I believe the members of the Television Academy voted in making their selections.
The Golden Globes, which aired Jan. 7, held a few surprises — and my track record in picking winners there was spotty, at best — but I’m sticking to my guns for the Emmys.
Here, without further ado, are my choices.
Drama Series
“Andor”
“Better Call Saul”
“The Crown”
“House of the Dragon”
“Succession”
“The White Lotus”
“The Last of Us”
“Yellowjackets”
Winner: “Succession.” This one’s almost a no-brainer, given the HBO series’ popularity and riveting storyline that, in the buzzy finale, crowned a successor to the Waystar Royco empire. A show everyone was, and still is, talking about.
Comedy Series
“Abbott Elementary”
“Barry”
“The Bear”
“Jury Duty”
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
“Only Murders in the Building”
“Ted Lasso”
“Wednesday”
Winner: “The Bear.” As I mentioned in my Golden Globes picks, I didn’t think Season 2 was all that — but the show’s rabid fans, and mostly everyone else disagree. I believe the academy voters will bestow a statuette, too, if only for the reams of good press the series generated.
Actor in a Drama Series
Jeff Bridges, “The Old Man”
Brian Cox “Succession”
Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”
Pedro Pascal, “The Last of Us”
Jeremy Strong, “Succession”
Winner: Jeremy Strong. I was surprised that he was edged out by “Succession” co-star Kieran Culkin at the Golden Globes — but I still think his riveting performance deserves an Emmy statuette. And, let’s face it, is there another performer in this category who made more headlines for their “method” acting? Whatever he did, it worked.
Actress in a Drama Series
Sharon Horgan, “Bad Sisters”
Melanie Lynskey, “Yellowjackets”
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Bella Ramsey, “The Last of Us”
Keri Russell, “The Diplomat”
Sara Snook, “Succession”
Winner: Melanie Lynskey. I just have a feeling about this one (Sarah Snook took the Golden Globe in this category). I think we’ve seen enough of Elisabeth Moss already in a series that should’ve ended two seasons ago.
Actor in a Comedy Series
Bill Hader, “Barry”
Jason Segel, “Shrinking”
Martin Short, “Only Murders in the Building”
Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso”
Jeremy Allen White, “The Bear”
Winner: White. I wouldn’t exactly brand “The Bear” as a comedy, but it’s hard to take your eyes off of White when he’s celebrating, ruminating (or melting down) as Carmy Berzatto in the Chicago-based restaurant series.
Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate, “Dead to Me”
Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary”
Natasha Lyonne, “Poker Face”
Jenna Ortega, “Wednesday”
Winner: Natasha Lyonne. She was excellent in “Poker Face” and was skunked at the Golden Globes. Now it’s her time to shine. And why are we still talking about “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”? Sheer laziness on the part of academy voters.
