The tragic accident occurred while 26-year-old Alexandre Pereira Alves was paragliding in Paraiba, Brazil, on the afternoon of Aug. 21, Jam Press reported. Alves, who had participated in the sport for several years, was doing a practice run when he encountered some trouble mid-flight and plunged 130 feet to the ground.
In the horrific clip, the Matureia-based daredevil can be seen literally spiraling out of control as he hurtles toward the dirt with his parachute in tow. The footage ends with Alves hitting the ground with great force as onlookers gasp in shock.
The paraglider reportedly died at the scene, whereupon his body was taken to the Center for Forensic Medicine and Dentistry (Numol) in Guarabira and then released to the family, G1 reported.
Alves was memorialized at a wake in Campina Grande on Monday and is slated to be buried at the municipal cemetery in Matureia on Tuesday.
It’s as yet unclear if the local authorities have launched a probe into the young man’s death.
In a similar paragliding accident earlier this month, top air-crobat Kevin Philipp barely escaped death after his chute didn’t open while he attempted to perform an acro-paragliding trick in Spain.
