Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Britain book relay spot with 4x100m mixed medley bronze at World Aquatics Championships 2024

Britain booked a relay quota spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a 4x100m mixed medley bronze medal at the World Aquatics Championships.

Medi Harris, Adam Peaty, Matthew Richards and Anna Hopkin were third in 03:40.22, finishing behind first-place United States and second-place Australia.

Peaty and Hopkin were both part of the British quartet which won 4x100m mixed medley Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 with a world record time, and they will now have the chance to defend this title in Paris.

“It is kudos to the team at how well we can stick together and still be in the medals when we are against some very, very solid teams,” said Peaty.

“Not that we aren’t one, it’s just not our priority right now to be in that peak condition that we’ll hopefully be in for Paris. It’s always great to be a part of Team Great Britain.”

Hopkin added: “Britain has had a really good mixed medley relay for quite a few years now, so it’s always good to be on a podium at the world stage.

“Hopefully, come Paris, we want to retain our Olympic title and we all want to be on this relay.”

Peaty had missed out on the podium in the men’s 50m breaststroke earlier in the day, placing fourth at the Aspire Dome in Doha.

Australia’s Sam Williamson finished with gold in 26.32, with Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi and US’s Nic Fink placing second and third respectively.

Richards reached the men’s 100m freestyle final, while compatriot Duncan Scott progressed to the men’s 200m medley final by winning his semi-final.

Britain’s Laura Stephens and Lauren Cox also booked a place in the finals of their respective events – the women’s 200m butterfly and women’s 50m backstroke.

Meanwhile, Daniel Wiffen became Ireland’s first world swimming champion by winning the men’s 800m freestyle final in 7:40.94.

He finished ahead of Australia’s Elijah Winnington and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri to make history.

The Olympic Games will return with Paris 2024, live on Eurosport and discovery+, the Eurosport app and at eurosport.com
