Paris 2024 Olympic torch design revealed by designer Mathieu Lehanneur with nearly one year to go until Games
The design for the Olympic torch that will carry the flame ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics has been revealed.
A total of 10,000 torchbearers will carry the torch and bring the flame to Paris ahead of the opening ceremony on July 26.
The torch has been designed by French designer Mathieu Lehanneur.
“Ritualistic and magical in equal measure, the torch is a mythical object. A symbol of cohesion and sharing, it really does play a key role in the Games.
“It will travel thousands of kilometres, passed from person to person, on land and sea. For Paris 2024, and for the first time in its history, it plays on perfect symmetry, speaking to us more clearly about equality.
“I wanted it to be extremely pure, iconic, almost elemental. As simple as a hyphen and as fluid as a flame.”
Lehanneur drew inspiration from three themes of Paris 2024 for the torch: equality, water and peacefulness.
“At Paris 2024, the torch will reflect our ambition for a French Games, with a strong aesthetic and creative dimension,” said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet.
“With this unique, iconic object, we wanted to put form to the service of substance once again, and that’s why we worked with the talented designer Mathieu Lehanneur.
“To create it, Mathieu Lehanneur drew inspiration from three key elements: equality, reflected in its perfect symmetry; water, evoked by the 3D and light effects; and peacefulness, with the purity of its shape and rounded edges.”
The Olympic flame will be extinguished after the Games finish but will be lit again ahead of the Paralympic Games.
The opening ceremony for the Paralympic Games will be held on August 28, 2024.
