Patti Smith discharged from Italy hospital, ‘in good health conditions’
Patti Smith has been reportedly released from the hospital in Bologna, Italy, after being forced to cancel one of her shows due to an unknown illness.
The “Because the Night” songstress, 76, was discharged Wednesday night after “a short period of observation in emergency.”
According to the Local Health Authority of Bologna, per the Los Angeles Times, Smith is “in good health conditions” and is expected to return to the stage after “an appropriate period of rest.”
The Post reached out to Smith for comment.
In accordance with her doctor’s wishes, Smith has reportedly cancelled her performance in Venice Thursday night and her upcoming Milan show.
Smith had been touring in Italy since late last month.
The “Gloria” singer is expected to return state-side on Dec. 27 to perform at the Chicago-based venue Salt Shed before closing out the year in New York City with two shows in Brooklyn.
News that the “Dancing Barefoot” singer had fallen ill broke Wednesday after Teatro Duse, the oldest theater in Bologna, announced that Smith canceled her set last-minute.
“With great regret, we inform the kind audience that the [Patti Smith] concert scheduled for today 12 December 2023 at 9 pm will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist,” the venue wrote in an Instagram post.
“We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the artist.”
In 2020, Smith got candid about her struggles with her health during the COVID-19 pandemic due to a lifelong battle with a bronchial condition.
“I was a sickly kid, sometimes they were worried that I wouldn’t pull through,” Smith told The Guardian at the time. “I had so much responsibility and a true purpose. To be in limbo almost 10 months, for a person like me who doesn’t like sitting in the same place, it’s been very challenging. I feel like I’m part-wolf, roaming from room to room.”
This past summer, Smith and her band played at Madison Square Garden as the opening act for the rock group, The National.
Smith, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, is also well known for her book “Just Kids,” which delves into her relationship with iconic photographer Roger Mapplethorpe. It later won the prestigious “One Book, One New York” award.
Recently, Smith was nominated to join the star-studded ranks of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was ranked at No. 117 on Rolling Stones’ list of 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
