Paul Hollywood talks baking muffins for Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman
Before he was a famous judge on “The Great British Bake Off,” Paul Hollywood had his baked goods judged by some surprising celebs.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Hollywood, 57, revealed that he once baked muffins for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the early ’90s when they were in Ireland filming the 1992 movie “Far and Away.”
“I used to do blueberry and pumpkin muffins at the Dorchester, and there was a request put in for extra muffins. I thought, ‘This is weird. I made enough,’ ” the celebrity chef said.
“And the room service guy came down and said, ‘We need some more muffins.’ And I said, ‘Well, it’s gonna be at least an hour. Who’s this for?’ ”
The food request that Hollywood wrote off as being “weird” turned out to be for “the Cruise party,” he was told.
Cruise, now 60, and Kidman, 55, were then a power couple, married from 1990 to 2001. During their heyday, they were also apparently fans of Paul Hollywood’s muffins.
Hollywood, who was shocked to hear that they were his customers, shared that he double-checked exactly who he was baking for.
“I said, ‘You mean …’ and they said, ‘Yeah,’ ” the baker said.
But, all’s well that ends well, because even though Hollywood thought that he made enough muffins and making more would be “weird,” the order ultimately “went over well.”
Hollywood then went on to become nearly as famous as Cruise and Kidman, as he’s served as a judge on “The Great British Bake Off” since 2010 (called “The Great British Baking Show” in America) as well as “The Great American Baking Show.”
His most recent endeavor is Season 6 of “The Great American Baking Show,” currently on the Roku Channel, where he’s a judge with Prue Leith, alongside hosts Ellie Kemper and Zach Cherry.
He also revealed that he’s used baked goods to seduce women.
“I think if you want to woo a woman, the best thing to do, for me, would be a beautiful pain au chocolat with their favorite chocolate inside. But it has to be fresh, and buttery, and crispy. That and a coffee in the morning,” he said.
Hollywood also confessed that there’s a little-known key to getting his approval on his shows.
“Here’s a secret I’ve never told anybody: If you make me a good key lime pie on ‘Bake Off,’ you’ll probably get a handshake.”
