‘Peaky Blinders’ star Cillian Murphy ‘open’ to movie version of hit series

“Peaky Blinders” gangster Tommy Shelby could jump to the big screen.

Series star Cillian Murphy, who played crime-family patriarch Tommy in the period British drama series from 2013 till last year, said he’s open to the idea of a “Peaky Blinders” movie in a wide-ranging interview he did with Margot Robbie in Variety.

Murphy, 47, and Robbie, 33, talked about their summer box-office behemoths “Oppenheimer” (Murphy) and “Barbie” (Robbie) — which spawned the “Barbenheimer” craze (fans seeing both movies) — as part of the outlet’s Actors on Actors series.

In the sit-down, Robbie brings up “Peaky Blinders” and says she’s “obsessed” with the series, created by Steven Knight, which streams on Netflix.

“In my opinion, there are two kinds of people in this world,” she said. “There are people who are obsessed with ‘Peaky Blinders,’ and then there’s the people who haven’t seen ‘Peaky Blinders.’ I obviously sit in the first category, so can we please talk about Tommy f—ing Shelby for just one minute? … Is there going to be a spinoff movie?”

“I mean, I’m open to the idea,” Murphy said. “I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell …”

“Please do it. Please!” Robbie replied. “I’ve now revealed that I’m a big fan of yours.”

Over the course if its six seasons, “Peaky Blinders” covered the years 1919 through 1933 as Tommy expanded his criminal enterprise from the gritty city of Birmingham into a good chunk of England — even Parliament — outfoxing his enemies every step of the way.

The series ended with Tommy riding off into the sunset, opening the door to a big-screen adaptation.

The show’s title comes from Tommy’s gang wearing razor blades under the peaks of their caps in case they feel the need to blind an enemy with the razor.

Sadly, “Peaky Blinders” co-star Helen McCory, who played Tommy’s tough-as-nails aunt, Polly Gray — a member of his crime syndicate — died in 2021 from lung cancer. She was married to “Billions” star Damian Lewis.

“Peaky Blinders” aired in Britain on BBC Two from seasons 1 through 4 and then, due its popularity, moved to BBC One for its final two seasons.
