PGMOL admits Brighton should have had a penalty against Tottenham after Kaoru Mitoma incident in Premier League match

PGMOL has admitted that Brighton should have been awarded a penalty in their 2-1 Premier League loss against Tottenham on Saturday.

Brighton were not awarded a penalty when Kaoru Mitoma looked to be fouled by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the box. The teams were level at 1-1 at the time.

Referee Stuart Attwell waved away the penalty shouts from Brighton, and the footage looked at by VAR confirmed Attwell’s decision, but now, Howard Webb, PGMOL’s chief refereeing officer, has reportedly apologised to Brighton and admitted the team should have been awarded a penalty.

Tottenham went on to win the match after Harry Kane scored Spurs’ second goal.

It was a tense match as both Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham interim boss Cristian Stellini were sent off during altercations between the two teams’ coaching staff.

The two exchanged words before kick-off, as De Zerbi had reportedly been unhappy with Stellini’s comments pre-match that suggested his side’s success came down to the ground work of former Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

After the match, Lewis Dunk said: “There’s no point having VAR in the game if you’re not going to make big decisions like that. That changes everything, I just don’t understand it.”

Stellini mentioned that Spurs were helped with VAR decisions, saying: “It is the first time this season we are lucky with the VAR. We have to enjoy this moment because we were many times not lucky with VAR. One time it happened for us.

“We respected many times VAR decisions. Today, everyone has to respect it.”

The loss means that Brighton are 10 points off of a top four spot. The club have reportedly asked PGMOL for clarification around five decisions taken during Saturday’s match.
