Police horses spark chase as run wrong way down highway
These cops didn’t hold their horses.
A pair of rogue police horses brought traffic to a screeching halt in Ohio after breaking free from their stables and then running the wrong way down a busy highway.
“Some real horsepower on I-90 in downtown Cleveland today,” the Ohio Department of Transportation wrote while sharing footage of the horses that escaped their stables Saturday.
“Any injuries? Neigh,” the department joked.
The clip shows cars slowing before coming to a sudden stop to the baffling sight of the two horses trotting past, heading west on the interstate’s eastbound lanes.
One officer is seen clapping to get the attention of the horses — one brown and one black — who instead ignore him and keep running, tailed by a police cruiser with flashing lights.
The horses veer off the highway and move down an onramp before cutting across a grassy section of a side street and out of view.
Several police officers on foot can be seen running after the mischievous horses and at least one motorist stepped out of their car to try and flag them down.
Cleveland Police Sgt. Wilfredo Diaz said the horses were members of the department’s mounted division that had “inadvertently strayed” during “routine care and exercise.”
“Mounted officers promptly recovered both horses, ensuring their safety, and no further incidents ensued,” Diaz said.
The Cleveland mounted police team is made up of eight horses and eight police officers, according to its website.
The team’s horses are named Breeze, Chex, Jim, Larry, George, Mandy, Jack and Nimo, although it is not clear which pair made the bid for freedom.
