Pompeo slams Biden for not backing Pelosi’s possible Taiwan trip

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blasted President Biden for not supporting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s unconfirmed visit to Taiwan, saying the administration should not kowtow to the Communist led regime as Hollywood has. ​

Pelosi, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed that she is leading a congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, but did not address whether she would travel to Taiwan.

“We’ve seen … where Hollywood has kowtowed to the Chinese communist party. The NBA has kowtowed to the Chinese communist party. It should not be the case where an American administration, the president of the United States, should do the same thing,” Pompeo told host John Catsimatidis on his WABC 770 AM radio show in an interview that aired Sunday. 

​“I don’t agree with Speaker Pelosi very often. But she made it clear that she wanted to go visit … Taiwan, an independent, sovereign nation. Now, the Biden is administration is saying, ‘Well, maybe that’s not smart,’” Pompeo said. 

He said allowing “America to be bullied by Chinese propaganda” after Biden spoke on the phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week “would send a really bad message to our friends in the region – the Australians, the South Koreans, the Japanese.”

“But mostly, it would tell the American people that it’s okay if the United States permits … [the Chinese] communist party …  to dictate how Americans will behave, where we will travel, the things we will say,” Pompeo said. 

Biden told reporters earlier this month that the “military thinks it’s not a good idea right now” for Pelosi to travel to Taiwan, a self-governed island that China believes is part of its territory. 

Xi warned Biden in the phone call last Thursday that the US should not meddle in its affairs with Taiwan. 

“The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan question is consistent, and resolutely safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people,” China’s foreign ministry said in a readout of the call between the two leaders.

“The public opinion cannot be defied. Those who play with fire will perish by it. It is hoped that the US will be clear-eyed about this,” it said.
