Poor weather conditions cancel men’s World Cup slalom races as heavy rain falls in Bansko, Bulgaria

The men’s World Cup slalom in Bansko on Sunday has been cancelled due to unsafe weather conditions.

FIS Alpine confirmed the cancellation of the event after heavy rainfall at the Bulgarian resort.

In a statement on social media, FIS wrote: “Race cancelled due to heavy rain in Bansko. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate today, but safety always comes first.

“Let’s hope for better weather next time, and until then, stay safe and dry.”

Following Saturday’s giant slalom, the slalom discipline was due to follow on Sunday.

The cancellation is the latest event on the Alpine calendar to be scuppered by bad weather conditions.

“Unfavourable snow conditions” prevented the World Cup races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from going ahead last week, while downhill races set to take place in Chamonix were also affected.

The Swiss star beat Norway’s Alexander Steen Olsen by 0.35 seconds to seal his 10th World Cup win of the season and extend his lead at the top of the overall standings to 822 points.
