Premier League Round-Up: Fulham beat Southampton, Crystal Palace see off Bournemouth, Newcastle draw with Leeds
Fulham shot up to seventh in the Premier League with a tight victory over struggling Southampton.
Having won 3-0 against Crystal Palace on Boxing Day, Fulham were looking for back-to-back victories for the first time since October.
They didn’t manage a single shot on target in the first half, but took the lead when James Ward-Prowse turned the ball into his own net after Andreas Pereira had slapped a volley in his direction from a corner.

Ward-Prowse then equalised for Southampton with a trademark free kick just before the hour mark.
Fulham appeared to have missed their chance at victory until Joao Palhinha popped up at the far post to head home a corner in the 88th minute. It was Fulham’s only shot on target of the match.
Gavin Bazunu bowled over Dan James deep in stoppage time to give Fulham a chance from the penalty spot, but Aleksandar Mitrovic’s effort was a poor one. Bazunu guessed right and saved the penalty.
Saints remain winless in the league since October. That makes six games without a victory for Nathan Jones’ side and sees them remain mired deep in relegation trouble at the bottom of the table.

Elsewhere, Palace struck back from their Boxing Day mauling against Fulham with a bright victory over Bournemouth.
Jordan Ayew nodded home the opening goal with a free header from a first-half corner.
Palace doubled their lead from another corner when Eberechi Eze was left completely unmarked at the top of the box.
Michael Olise rolled the corner direct to Eze who took the time he was given to place his shot well beyond the diving Mark Travers.
The Cherries have now lost both their League games since the World Cup break, after also losing 2-0 to Chelsea on Tuesday.
As a result, they now sit just three points outside the drop zone, while Palace are six points further ahead in mid table.
Newcastle missed the chance to make it seven league wins in a row when they fell to a goalless draw against Leeds.
The hosts piled on the shots but created little in terms of good openings. Leeds for their part remained a threat throughout.
It was a match that became somewhat spiteful by the end, with eight players being cautioned for bad challenges.
The draw keeps Newcastle in third place and within six points of top spot.
It was Leeds’ first clean sheet in nine games and takes them to 14th, three points clear of relegation.
