Primoz Roglic to miss Tour de France and World Championships as he targets fourth Vuelta a Espana win

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) has confirmed he will not ride the Tour de France and is set to target the Vuelta a Espana again.
Roglic is coming off the back of winning the Giro d’Italia, where he overhauled Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) in dramatic fashion.

With the Tour starting in a few weeks, it was always unlikely that Roglic would return so soon for another Grand Tour.

Instead he will aim for a fourth Vuelta win after triumphing in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

“I’m not going to the Tour, but I’m probably going to race Vuelta a Espana,” he said at an event in his home country of Slovenia.

“Vuelta will most likely be my next race. I really didn’t plan to do Tour de France this year.”

Roglic also confirmed he will skip this year’s World Championships which will take place in Scotland in August.

“That does not fit in the plans towards the Vuelta. That’s how we agreed with the team.

“We cannot start competitions without proper preparation. Without a good preparation I can’t enjoy a race much.”

The Vuelta will start on August 26.

Roglic withdrew from last year’s Vuelta ahead of Stage 17 following a crash.

Jonas Vingegaard will lead Jumbo-Visma at the Tour as he seeks to defend his title.

Roglic has crashed and abandoned the last two times he has competed at the Tour.

Asked if he would consider changing teams to get a better shot at winning the race, he said: “The main thing for me is to achieve the goals that I still lack.

“So far I have been getting all the support I wanted. So I don’t see any problems going forward. But when we can no longer achieve these goals…”
