Prince Harry arrives in California, missing royal celebrations
Prince Harry arrived back in the US looking glum late Sunday after taking off from his grandmother’s Platinum Jubilee on a private jet before the celebrations came to a close.
Harry — who was booed alongside wife Meghan Markle during their only official appearance in their rare UK trip — looked notably somber as he was photographed after arriving back in his new home in California’s swanky Santa Barbara.
He had left his old home in the UK, Frogmore Cottage, in time to jet out of Farnborough Airport at 1:30 p.m., according to The Sun — meaning before his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, made her final appearance in the celebrations marking her historic 70-year reign.
“There was no fanfare, they just went,” one insider told The Sun of the trip that was the first time in the UK for Harry’s daughter, Lilibet.
“They didn’t stick around for the Platinum Jubilee pageant,” the insider said.
Their private jet was estimated to cost about $200,000, according to The Sun, which stressed it was not clear who paid for it.
As Prince Harry was traveling, his grandmother appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace along with her eldest son, Prince Charles, 73, and his wife Camilla — as well as Harry’s brother Prince William, 39, his wife Catherine, 40, and their three young kids.
It was seen by royal watchers as a clear show of the future of the monarchy, with Harry taking no place after his shock exit in 2020.
During his short trip, Harry had been kept mostly behind the scenes. He was booed during his one official appearance, at St. Paul’s Cathedral Friday, where he was also kept notably far apart from senior royals, including his once-close brother.
Harry and Meghan turned down the chance to have snacks and drinks with family members after the service, the UK paper said.
Their kids — Archie and Lilibet — were not seen in public at all.
However, some younger royals — not including William’s kids — attended a low-key garden party to celebrate Lilibeth’s first birthday, The Sun said.
