Prince Philip wanted to sue the makers of ‘The Crown’

Prince Philip was so unhappy about his portrayal on the Netflix hit “The Crown,” he wanted to sue the makers of the show, according to a report.

The storyline that apparently sparked Philip’s ire was based on the death of his older sister, Princess Cecilie, The Sunday Times of London reported.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who died last year at age 99, went so far as to consult Farrer & Co, the law firm that aided the royal family since the 1930s, on how to proceed.

“I know Prince Philip consulted his lawyer about it, to ask ‘What can I do about it?’ He was very upset about the way that was portrayed,” Hugo Vickers, a royal historian and author, told the paper. “He was human. He could be hurt like anybody else.”

The plot point in contention was featured in the penultimate episode of the show’s second season, which aired in 2017 without a fictional disclaimer attached to it.

In the storyline, a then 16-year-old Philip gets into trouble at his boarding school and cannot spend his break in Germany with Cecilie, the third of Philip’s four older sisters, who is pregnant with her fourth child.

In the episode Cecilie explains to Philip that his school trouble caused her fly to London. Her character then dies in a plane crash.

In the show’s reimagining of Cecilie’s funeral, the royal siblings’ father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, says, “I’m surprised he dare show himself here. Had it not been for Philip and his indiscipline she would never have taken that flight. It’s true, isn’t it boy? You’re the reason we’re all here burying my favorite child. Get him out of here.”

Cecilie did die when a November 1937 flight crashed with her, her husband and their two young sons aboard. The 26-year-old gave birth in the air and the baby’s body was found next to her amongst the wreckage.

However, the doomed princess’ travel plans had nothing to do with Philip, who was very close to his sister.

“I remember sitting next to the Duke of Edinburgh at a dinner, and him being so upset about it and what it [The Crown] was saying about him,” a close friend of the royal family said.
