‘Princess Diaries 3’ might be ‘shelved’
The former Queen of Genovia has spoken.
Julie Andrews is giving an update on the status of “Princess Diaries 3” — and audiences will be royally disappointed.
“It’s quite a long time now since the two ‘Diaries’ were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone,” she told Today.com in an interview, which published Friday.
She quipped: “I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject ‘til it’s dead.”
The project was being written by “Supergirl” screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji.
“The Sound of Music” actress acknowledged that there has been “dialogue” about her possible return for the third “Diaries,” but she isn’t even sure a three-peat is happening at all.
“I think I may be wrong, but I think it’s been shelved now – I can’t be sure,” she went on. “I’m sure there will be another version on another day.”
The first Disney “Diaries” movie launched Anne Hathaway’s career in 2001. She portrayed Mia Thermopolis, the awkward granddaughter of Andrew’s Queen Clarisse Renaldi, who was stepping down as the ruler of Genovia, meaning Mia would take the crown.
Mia was crowned the Queen of Genovia in “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” in 2006.
The Post has contacted reps for Hathaway, Mukerji and Disney for comment.
Mukerji’s rep confirmed to The Post in November 2022 that she was penning the script for a new movie.
Producer Debra Martin Chase, who worked on the first two movies, would reportedly return for the third movie, sources also told the Hollywood Reporter at the time. Melissa Stack, the writer behind Cameron Diaz’s comedy “The Other Woman,” was executive producing.
Hathaway revealed in 2019 that “there is a script for the third movie.”
“I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” she claimed during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.”
