Rachel Morin’s killer will likely strike again: cops
The mystery man who viciously murdered Maryland mother of five Rachel Morin will likely strike again if he isn’t caught soon, police warned.
The killer could become more brazen as his time on the run enters its third week, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler told the public.
“This person has an absolute disregard for the sanctity of human life and until he’s arrested there is a threat he’ll do something harmful to someone else,” Gahler told Fox News.
Law enforcement has been hunting down the unidentified killer since Morin’s body was found Aug. 6 on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air — less than 24 hours after her boyfriend reported her missing.
A DNA sample retrieved from the scene matched Morin’s killer to a man wanted for the March home invasion and assault of a young girl in Los Angeles.
Despite the link, the match offered no clues into the identity of the violent perpetrator.
“This individual poses a threat to every community from here to Los Angeles because we don’t know where he’s laying his head at night,” said Gahler, calling the case a “top priority.”
Because of the violent nature of both crimes — as well as the proximity in time between each attack in spite of the staggering distance — investigators believe both attacks are just the tip of the iceberg.
“I just don’t believe you do two things that are so serious in nature and that’s your starting point. Most likely you’ve been involved in other crimes,” Gahler said.
Though the identity and origin of the murderer remain a mystery, police believe he has ties to both Los Angeles and Bel Air.
Gahler implored residents of each area to come forward if they recognize the man, days after cops released video surveillance of the shirtless killer fleeing from the home of his Los Angeles victim.
Police described him as a Hispanic man in his 20s who weighs around 160 pounds and is about 5-foot-9 tall.
“It’s very likely someone knows him around there and someone knows him here,” the sheriff said.
Detectives believe the killer indiscriminately targeted Morin, 37, after crossing paths with her on the popular hiking trail near her home earlier this month.
She had gone for a run alone and was reported missing by her boyfriend Richard Tobin hours after she failed to return home.
A man who claimed his stepdaughter — Morin’s friend — was the first person to find the body said it appeared as if the victim’s head had been “smashed in with a rock” before she was dragged into a drain tunnel, leaving a long blood trail behind.
Police — who have not divulged any details into the gruesome crime — have not confirmed that account.
