Ragnhild Mowinckel claims maiden World Cup downhill win in latest crash-affected race in Cortina
Ragnhild Mowinckel claimed her maiden downhill World Cup win on another crash-affected race in Cortina.
She told FIS she had suffered “a laceration on my chin that I’ll need to get stitched up, and we’ll see how my head is doing later. I think, for the most part, I’m pretty lucky.”
A lengthy delay followed Wright’s crash while action was also held up for an hour due to strong winds, at which point home favourite Sofia Goggia led the way.
But Mowinckel, a downhill silver medallist at PyeongChang 2018, mastered the testing conditions to come home 0.44 seconds inside Goggia’s time and earn a fourth career World Cup success.
Mowinckel said: “I was not expecting that. I feel like that break really helped my mentality.
“Before when I came up to the start, I was really nervous. It’s a fast one and there’s a lot happening, when you see girls going out all the time.
“When that break happened, those worries went away. I’ll just ski and see how it goes. I kept my head calm and fixed the stuff that I was bad at yesterday.
“Cortina is an absolutely special place. I love this place. Even though I’ve never performed here before the last couple of years, I’ve always loved Cortina.”
American Jacqueline Wiles also surpassed Goggia to claim silver, her best World Cup result.
The action from Cortina concludes with Sunday’s super-G.
