Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti ‘hoping’ Luka Modric is fit for Man City CL tie as midfielder suffers thigh injury

Luka Modric is a doubt for Real Madrid’s upcoming matches against Osasuna and Manchester City.

Real are set to miss out on the La Liga title this season, trailing leaders Barcelona by 11 points with both teams having played 31 games in the league so far in the campaign.

However Real have a Copa del Rey final against the Basque side on May 6, before they play their first leg of the semi-final Champions League tie against City on May 9.

Both fixtures offer the chance of ending the season with something to show for their efforts under Carlo Ancelotti this year.

Real have a unique tradition of success in the Champions League but up against Pep Guardiola’s City they are already considered underdogs by many in the semi-final, and losing Modric would be a further blow.

His club have said that the 37-year-old Croatian midfielder has a problem at “the back of his left thigh.”

Manager Ancelotti explained: “He had an injury in the game at Girona [on Tuesday] and is out of action,” after the playmaker was substituted in midweek as Girona won 4-2.

Real have two games before their knockout matches, first against Almeria and then Real Sociedad.

Ancelotti added: “We’re waiting to see how he progresses and I don’t know if he will make the cup final.

“Let’s hope we have him back for the remaining games, which are important.”
