Republican Rep. Chris Stewart to step down over wife’s ongoing health issues: report

Rep. Chris Stewart could resign from the House of Representatives as soon as Wednesday morning due to his wife’s ongoing health issues.

The Salt Lake Tribune, citing multiple sources, reported Tuesday that the 62-year-old Stewart (R-Utah) will leave Congress to care for his wife, Evie.

Stewart’s office did not respond to The Post’s request for comment and it was not immediately clear what health issues afflict his wife.

Stewart was elected to a sixth term this past November, defeating Democratic challenger Nick Mitchell by more than 30 percentage points.

A member of the House Appropriations Committee and the House Intelligence Committee, Stewart represents a safe Republican district covering much of the Beehive State’s rural south and west.

His resignation would temporarily reduce the GOP’s already razor-thin majority in the House, which is currently composed of 222 Republicans and 213 Democrats.

Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox will have a week from Stewart’s resignation to set the dates for a special primary and general election to replace the departing lawmaker.

According to the Tribune, Stewart was believed to be considering a 2024 Senate run for the seat currently occupied by centrist Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah).

Stewart would be the second Utah congressman in six years to resign mid-term.

In June 2017, former Rep. Jason Chaffetz abruptly left office to become a Fox News contributor.

“There is not a finer person than Chris Stewart,” Chaffetz told the Tribune Tuesday.

“He serves with integrity and patriotism.”
