Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley hopeful of Great Britain success at FIM Speedway World Cup in Wroclaw
Robert Lambert thinks “the odds are very high” of Great Britain enjoying success at the FIM Speedway World Cup with their “best team in 20 years”.
The Speedway World Cup returns after a six-year absence as nine nations battle it out at the Olympic Stadium in Wroclaw.
Great Britain are competing in their semi-final against Sweden, Czech Republic and Germany on the opening day on Tuesday, July 25.
The nation with the most points in each semi-final advances to the final with hosts Poland, while the nations finishing second and third in both semi-finals advance to a Race Off, with the winner receiving the fourth spot in the final.
Great Britain have not won the World Cup since doing so on home soil in 1989.
“I haven’t seen it in my lifetime and to add a World Cup win to the history books would be pretty incredible.”
Lambert was part of the GB team that lifted the Speedway of Nations title in 2021 and finished as runners-up last year.
He added: “It has been a long road to get success for GB and in Manchester in 2021, we made it happen and we got the gold.
“It was great to do it in the SON, but now they have brought back the World Cup and we will definitely be pushing to get some kind of medal in that also.
“I would love to add that to my collection and CV, so we will do everything possible – individually and also as a team – to make that a reality. I think we have a good chance, and the odds are very high on us getting a medal.”
Lambert is joined in the GB team by Tai Woffinden, Dan Bewley, Adam Ellis and Tom Brennan.
Woffinden and Bewley both race at club level for Sparta Wrocław, who compete at the Olympic Stadium.
That track knowledge only adds to the expectation that Great Britain should be among the favourites to medal at the World Cup.
“Everyone is looking at Team GB, but I think we have to try and block that out and just focus on our racing,” said Lambert.
“We all know we can perform well in Wroclaw and give the other guys a run for their money. We are looking forward to it and we are keen to see what we can achieve.
“We are all good on this track, but this is also a track where anyone can have a good day, so we can’t write anybody off. We need to be fully focused. We need to keep building those points up and see what we are left with at the end.
“We have our best team in 20 years or so and we can potentially do something good. I think that fills us with confidence after the last two years of getting a medal in the SON.”
Bewley says he is “really excited” for the event on his home track.
“I have always loved the World Cup and I have never been in it,” he said.
“I am really excited about it. It’s always my favourite meeting. It’s a pretty cool one and Wroclaw is one of the best tracks where you can have a meeting like that. It’s going to be a pretty cool week.
“Coming from motocross, one of my favourite meetings is the Motocross of Nations. You have 40 riders in a race there, but there’s one senior and one junior rider generally. You are riding as individuals but all the points from the riders combine.
“The World Cup is more like that. You have four riders battling. With four riders from four countries, every point matters.”
