Ruben Selles named Southampton manager until end of season after win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Southampton have confirmed that Ruben Selles has been appointed as their manager until the end of the 2022-23 season.

The 39-year-old was brought in as interim manager after the club sacked Nathan Jones earlier this month.

Selles, who has coaching experience in Greece, Azerbaijan, and Denmark, arrived at Southampton last summer, initially as assistant to former boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

So far, he’s managed just the one match, a 1-0 victory against Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, with the sole goal coming from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick on the brink of half-time.

The club had reportedly been in talks to bring former Leeds manager Jesse Marsch; however talks reportedly broke down after both parties failed to agree on the contract length.

Selles has publicly admitted that he would like the position, saying: “I have been through all the levels of football, not just in England, but in the rest of the world.

“I am very proud of what I did, every single corner I’ve been in. I have a lot of personal experience and coaching hours, so I think it is a natural thing for me.

“I want to be the manager. And as you asked me three or four months ago, I think I’m capable of doing that just as any other manager.

“But that is not my decision, and that is okay for me. I just put everything I can, and we are working really hard.

“Those are my skills, and those in the club will make a decision, but of course, I will be more than happy to get the job.”

Southampton are currently bottom of the table, with 18 points from 23 matches and are three points from safety.

Selles’ first match in charge as permanent manager will be against Leeds United, who sit one place above them in 19th, on Saturday.
