Ryder Cup 2023: Rory McIlroy and Masters champion Jon Rahm named in Europe squad to face Team USA in Italy

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and Spaniard Jon Rahm have both been included in the European team for this year’s Ryder Cup.

McIlroy leads the way in the European Points list after finishing no lower than a tie for ninth his last seven competitions.

He has four wins from six appearances in the competition since making his Ryder Cup debut in 2010, and has played a total of 24 matches.

This will be McIlroy’s seventh consecutive Ryder Cup appearance, and he has won 12 of those matches, halving four.

Meanwhile, Rahm will be appearing in the competition for a third time in a row and has played eight matches, winning four, losing three and halving one.

The world No.3 had enjoyed a stellar year to date after his winning his second major at The Masters back in April.

The European team will be captained by Luke Donald, while Zach Johnson takes charge of the US side, with the action getting underway on September 29.

Italy’s Marco Simone Golf and Country Club will host the event, which runs for three days until October 1.

Donald and Team Europe have decided not to pick players who opted to switch to the LIV Tour, with 10 places still to be confirmed.

Three players will qualify from the European Points List, while a further three will come from the World Points List alongside six wild card captain’s picks. A total of 10 places are still to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the United States have yet to confirm any players. Six will qualify via the US rankings list, alongside six wild card captain’s picks.

At present, world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and 2023 US Open winner Wyndham Clark sit top of the US points list.

The US are the reigning champions after winning the trophy two years ago at Whistling Straits.
