Sam Atkin breaks Mo Farah’s 3,000m British record in Boston, Dina Asher-Smith clocks fastest 60m time in Germany

Sam Atkin clocked a new British 3,000m record by running 7:31.97 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic event in Boston, beating Mo Farah’s time of 2016.

The Grimsby-born US-based athlete improved on Farah’s time of 7:32.62 to finish second behind American Yared Nuguse, who won the race in 7:28.24.

“The race plan was to sit on Nuguse and see what I could do. It went well,” said Grimsby-born Atkin.

Speaking to letsrun.com, he added: “I wish I’d gone a little bit earlier but I can’t complain as it’s a British record.

“It’s a good first win of the season.”

Atkin has shown great promise in recent seasons with 13:03.64 indoors for 5000m and 27:26.58 for 10,000m.

However, he didn’t make the final at Worlds and dropped out of the Commonwealth and European 10,000 finals.

Meanwhile, Dina Asher-Smith set a new British record at the World Indoor Tour in Germany on Friday.

The 27-year-old clocked a time of 7.04 seconds to triumph in the 60m final, beating Asha Philip’s previous best of 7.06 seconds to win the European title in Belgrade in 2017.

Asher-Smith finished ahead of Poland’s Ewa Swoboda with Mujinga Kambundji coming third in Karlsruhe.

“I’m really happy to have run a British record today, it was one of my indoor aims so I’m really happy to have ticked that off kind of on my second race of the season,” Asher-Smith told World Athletics.

“I’m just hoping to continue running fast and enjoy the next few races I have coming up.

“I was just hoping to put together a good race today, you never know, you can have your fingers crossed and hope for a good time but sometimes it just doesn’t happen, trust me we’ve all been there.

“I was just focused on ticking off what I needed to do in the race, making sure I stayed focus and ran my race plan, I knew if I did that I’d be in with a shot of a really good time. I’d have loved to have run a little faster but I’m taking this one.”
