Scotland 1-3 England: Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Harry Kane in the goals as England secure friendly win

Jude Bellingham capped a sparkling display with a goal as England won 3-1 against Scotland in a lively Hampden Park friendly that commemorated 150 years since the sides’ inaugural meeting.

The hosts came into the contest on a wave of positivity, but it was the Three Lions who dominated for long passages of play and they silenced the Tartan Army with a double-blast in three first-half minutes.

Phil Foden opened the scoring when he slotted home Kyle Walker’s cross-shot on 32 minutes, before Bellingham punished Andy Robertson’s howler of a clearance with a low strike shortly after.

The visitors continued to look comfortable until substitute Harry Maguire diverted Robertson’s low cross into his own net on 67 minutes.

There was a brief rally from the hosts but England soon re-asserted their authority with the impressive Bellingham teeing up Harry Kane to make sure of victory nine minutes from time.

England will now return to action on October 13 when they host Australia in another friendly prior to a Euro 2024 Group C qualifier at home to Italy four days later.

Scotland visit Spain in a Group A qualifier on October 12 before a friendly in France.

Talking Point

A sobering night for Scotland.

Ahead of this landmark clash, there was plenty of talk about Scotland being one of Europe’s in-form sides and how they could be ready to show they have cut the gap between themselves and the Auld Enemy.

It proved to be a false dawn, or as Scotland legend Ally McCoist put it: ’a rude awakening.’

The Scots were second best throughout, offering little in attack and looking a shadow of the team that have won five out of five in Euro 2024 qualifying. Indeed, their evening was further dampened by news that Norway had beaten Georgia and therefore denied the Scots the chance to celebrate qualification tonight. However, they still need just two points from their final three Group A matches to reach back-to-back Euros and will be confident of reaching their target.

However, the gulf between the sides was clear. For much of the evening England played within themselves, rarely needing to move through the gears. Indeed, it was a solid night for the Three Lions and Gareth Southgate will be delighted by the impact of Bellingham but also Lewis Dunk, who was excellent at the heart of the defence in just his second start for his country.

Player of the match

Jude Bellingham (England) The Real Madrid man showed his class on the ball in the midfield and with direct runs in-behind the Scotland defence that were difficult for the hosts to shackle. Had a hand in the opener, set up the third and fired in the second to continue his fine goalscoring form for club and now country this season.
